Looking to lay the groundwork to advance the growth of the medicinal cannabis industry, Puerto Rico will host the second edition of Puerto Rico MedCann.Biz, an interdisciplinary forum that will bring together all the components of this new treatment alternative for patients with debilitating medical conditions in the island.

The international event will be held Oct. 18-19 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Isla Verde.

“We’re at a crucial point for the medical cannabis industry in Puerto Rico and what happens in the coming months will impact the lives of thousands of patients on the island. It is the responsibility of everyone involved in the industry to be educated and promote a comprehensive approach to this topic,” said Ingrid Schmidt, founding member of Puerto Rico MedCann.Biz.

“The health and welfare of hundreds of people who are considering this treatment as an option depends on the development and implementation of the right tools to provide decent and quality services, and this event addresses such need,” she said.

Puerto Rico MedCann.Biz will offer several tracks to address the essential columns that will ensure the success of medical cannabis as medical option on the island. One of these tracks is the health component of the event that will focus on promoting patient adherence and provision of treatment by the local health sector.

The forum will also have a business component focused on connecting entrepreneurs and local suppliers with the needs of the industry. These include goods and services such as real estate, legal services, marketing, packaging, clinical trials, research and development, among others.

The third column of the event is the educational track provided by the CannaWorks Institute, which will offer the courses required to citizens, businesses and health professionals interested in joining the industry, in accordance with the regulations of the Puerto Rico Department of Health.

Among the international speakers attending the forum is Joel Stanley, CEO of Charlotte’s Web Botanicals and co-creator of the strain of cannabis used to treat world-renowned case of Charlotte Figi. The girl became a living testimony of the benefits of medical cannabis after her parents chose to use cannabis oil to treat an advanced syndrome that provoked extreme seizures to the five-year old girl.

Another confirmed speaker is nurse Heather Manus, of the American Cannabis Nurses Association, who will provide tools to health professionals and caregivers regarding cannabinoid therapies. John Davis, entrepreneur and activist from Washington State, will also participate and provide his perspective and experience regarding the interaction of state public policy on medical cannabis and federal law.

Forum attendees will also benefit from the testimonials of local and international personalities who have used medical cannabis as an effective alternative treatment. In addition, Puerto Rico government officials will be attending, including Mayra Maldonado, Advisor to the Department of Health and creator of the regulation on medicinal cannabis, as well as Francisco Bonet, executive director of the Medical Tourism Corporation of Puerto Rico.

In its first round held in June, the Puerto Rico MedCann.Biz proved to be a successful platform with more than 500 attendees. Those interested in participating can visit www.prmedcannbiz.com.
