Open Mobile: Data roaming deal with Verizon opens new business prospects

Josué González, marketing director of Open Mobile

Prepaid wireless carrier Open Mobile recently struck a data roaming agreement with Verizon Wireless that will allow customers traveling stateside to avoid overage charges for using another network. The agreement is also the first of a string of new business opportunities between the carriers in the foreseeable future, Open Mobile executives said.

As part of the agreement Open Mobile will be launching in coming weeks its first 4G-Long Term Evolution-ready smartphone on its network, an HTC device that will function both on the island and off. The carriers already have a voice roaming agreement in place.

On the other hand, the agreement also allows the more than 109 million stateside Verizon Wireless customers traveling to the island to have access to voice and data service through Open Mobile’s network.

“The experience and service quality of voice and data roaming for both Open Mobile and Verizon Wireless customers, will be unmatched by joining these two networks, because they will have the most extensive network coverage in the U.S. and Puerto Rico,” said Open Mobile’s Marketing Director Josué J. González.

Open Mobile clients traveling stateside and who are signed up to the $49 Data, $55, $65 monthly plans, as well as the iPhone 4S, will automatically have access to the data roaming service through the Verizon Wireless network.

The agreement is possible since both carriers use the same digital platform that runs on CDMA 1900 MHz and 4G-LTE.
