Open Mobile switches on LTE network

The availability of next-generation Long-Term Evolution wireless technology is becoming more pervasive in Puerto Rico, as carriers unveil deployment plans for platforms capable of carrying blazing speeds and new services.
On Thursday, Open Mobile, the island’s only no-contract provider, announced it had flipped the switch on its LTE network, which is initially available in the San Juan metropolitan area.
As News is my Business first informado in October 2011, Open Mobile planned to invest $250 million in its new network, the highest amount of money it has pumped into its Puerto Rico infrastructure since entering the local market in 1999.
“We’re pleased to deliver the highest mobile technology to the Puerto Rico market and especially to our customers,” said Josué González, the carrier’s marketing director. “With this technology, customers will enjoy a mobile Internet experience through unique speeds, without being tied to a contract.”
Open Mobile is promising customers wireless Internet speeds that are 10 times faster than what is available through current Internet networks. Furthermore, the carrier said its LTE customers will be able to download three photos, a video and up to two songs in 10 seconds.
Coupled with the announcement of the new network availability, Open Mobile unveiled several wireless Internet devices capable of delivering LTE speeds: Novatel’s USB Ovation MC551 and the MIFI 4510.
The carrier chose Ericsson to supply, deploy and manage its islandwide network.
