A new $3 million boutique hotel — Hotel Decanter — recently opened in Old San Juan, adding to the historic city’s roster of options of places to stay.

The three-story property on the corner of San José and Luna Streets, spans 15,222 square-feet and houses 20 rooms. Eight of the rooms are suites. The hotel also has a restaurant L’Osteria de Decanter, hotel owners said.

“We’re very proud to contribute to Puerto Rico’s economic development through the tourism industry,” said Hotel Decanter Owner José Santana-Rabel said, adding the new operation is generating between 10 and 12 direct jobs. “We will be an alternative boutique hotel focused on personalized service to all guests who visit us.”

The building where the Decanter Hotel is located has an interesting story, given its privileged location near the San Juan Cathedral and Plaza de Armas. According to city plans for between 1772 and 1776, it is one of Old San Juan’s oldest structures, suggesting it was built before 1776.

According to historical archives the new owners consulted, it was first a property or family home and then it was transferred to the Order of San Idelfonso to become the Asylum of San Idelfonso. There is also evidence that was it acquired by the Association of Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of Puerto Rico, who used it for educational purposes, the property owners said.

In May 1960, the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co. bought the building, which was subsequently had owners that attempted to develop the structure contrary to parameters set forth by the Puerto Rico Institute of Culture.
