Menchies to open San Patricio, Dorado locations in ’12

The first two Menchie’s frozen yogurt shops planned for Puerto Rico will open in San Patricio Plaza and Doramar Plaza next year, News is my Business confirmed Wednesday.

Entrepreneur couple Alba López and Abner Rivera, who hold the franchise rights to expand the California-based self-service creamy treat chain, said the investment associated with the first two stores is about $800,000.

The first store to open in March will be at the Guaynabo mall, occupying some 850 square feet of space where the former Camille’s Sidewalk Café was located, López said.

That location offers an additional 25 square-foot area outside, where she said they will place tables and chairs, “and we’ll be able to celebrate birthdays and activities in that space.”

In early May, Menchie’s will make its debut in Dorado, in a 1,000 square-foot standalone location next to Krispy Kreme, at the Doramar Plaza mall.

Each store will create nine new jobs, López said.

News is my Business first reported on Menchie’s plans to enter the Puerto Rico market. The wildly popular Menchie’s concept offers yogurt lovers an interactive experience through a self-serve bar. Customers grab a cup or a waffle bowl, take their pick from seven frozen yogurt machines — each dispensing three different flavors — pile on toppings that range from cookies to fresh fruit, and pay for their treat based on weight.

It will compete with several other yogurt shops that already have local presence, including Yogen Früz and FroYo world in Miramar.

In anticipation to the Menchie’s store openings, the company will be accepting job applications through the www.menchies.com website. Interviews will begin in mid-January, said López, noting that more information on the local operation can be found via Facebook.
