Michaels had three stores in Puerto Rico that closed in 2002.

A decade after exiting the local market, Michaels Arts and Crafts is looking to come back to Puerto Rico with at least three stores, News is my Business learned.

The retailer that specializes in selling products for the do-it-yourself home decorator, art supplies and craft supplies, is already scouting for store managers and assistant managers for locations planned for Bayamón, Caguas and Guaynabo, according to six job postings listed on its website.

Once the stores open, they would mark the return of the Irving, TX.-based chain which in the late 1990s had three stores in Puerto Rico, in Carolina, Hatillo and Mayagüez. The retailer opted to close them in 2002 after determining they were no longer profitable.

A spokeswoman for Michaels, who commented on the condition of anonymity, said there “is no information available at this time” that could be disclosed regarding Michaels’ future plans for the Puerto Rico market.

Once opened, the trio of local stores would join Michael’s existing 1,066 stores in 49 states and Canada.

Why you haven’t established yet? Is it a permission issue or other situation preventing your opening in Puerto Rico? Please, let me know. Maybe I can help. This is a very good moment to do business in Puerto Rico.
