Students from University High School at the University of Puerto Rico recently participated in the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia’s Global Economic Forum through an Internet2 connection established at the UPR-Río Piedras campus.

The “Gender Equality and Economic Development: Crafting a Post-2015 Global Agenda” forum offered students the opportunity to hear from and discuss with experts the issues of gender equality and its impact on economic development.

This year’s Global Economic Forum included presentations from Zohra Khan of United Nations Women, Jeni Klugman from the World Bank, and Marjoie Margolies of the Woman’s Campaign International.

The principle of gender equality, championed by the United Nations, is seen as a cornerstone of global economic development and human rights. Women empowered with education and economic resources can significantly contribute to the health and productivity of their families, their community and the nation. Students were charged with discussing and creating statements for use by the United Nations in the revision of their Millennium Development Goals in 2015.

The event was held at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Students from regional high schools were invited to participate on-site at Temple University, while UHS and the Affiliated Senior High School of Chung-Hsing University in Taiwan were selected to participate as delegates via telepresence using Internet2.

In addition to listening to the presentations, both schools made live presentations to attendees at Temple Universities, and posted questions directly to the panel of experts in a live, high-definition real-time H.323 videoconference.

Internet2 is a national computer network for research & education, aimed at developing and deploying advanced computer technologies. Founded in 1996 by a consortium of 34 universities, Internet2 has expanded to incorporate hundreds of universities, research institutions, government agencies, K12 schools and libraries. Internet2 serves as a complimentary network to the Internet, with the distinction that content and services have notable improvements in richness, quality, performance and speed. Additionally, Internet2 provides for advanced services that permit better performance of many types of advanced applications.

The event was facilitated by the UPR’s High Performance Computing Facility and the Puerto Rico Bridge Initiative, a ARRA-funded project working to improve broadband services in Puerto Rico.

“This groundbreaking event demonstrated the future of Internet technology, and opened the eyes of all witnessing the event,” said Karen Larson, vice president of Critical Hub Networks, the operator of the Puerto Rico Bridge Initiative.

For those who question how PR used its ARRA funds, while Congress had mandated that most be spent on social programs and taxpayer rebates, we were able to fund the facility where UHS’ teleconference was held, among other more concrete uses.
