Perea Hospital, located in the municipality of Mayagüez, is embarking on an aggressive growth plan that entails the investment of $19.5 million for the construction of infrastructure, acquisition of new equipment and the remodeling of existing structures.

The ambitious three-year plan aims to bring more complete health services and the latest medical advances, in order to strengthen the hospital’s service offering to patients in the western region of Puerto Rico.

The expansion will add 40 patient beds and is expected to increase the flow of patients by at least 5 percent in the first year. It will also generate 75 new direct jobs and 20 indirect jobs.

“This is only a portion of what we will accomplish in our first phase,” said Jorge I. Martínez-Rivera, executive director of Perea Hospital Mayagüez.

Martínez-Rivera explained that the project will give the institution new admissions and waiting rooms, new cubicles for pediatric and adult patients, new trauma rooms, forty new private and semiprivate rooms for adults in a new building connected to the main building. In addition, new technology and equipment will be acquired for all departments.

The expansion project will be divided in two phases. The first phase is expected to conclude in 18 months and calls for the remodeling of the existing facade and a new multilevel parking will be constructed with capacity for 650 vehicles. The second phase includes the remodeling of the Pediatrics Department, existing adult patient rooms and the acquisition of new medical equipment.

“Metro Pavia Health System begins 2016 with an impetus for growth,” said Metro Pavia Health System president Karen Z. Artau. Perea Hospital belongs to the Metro Pavia Health System, the largest hospital network in Puerto Rico Rico, with 12 healthcare institutions across the island.
