Pet specialty retailer Petco opened its second store in Puerto Rico last week, at the Ponce Mall. The 12,000 square foot location will feature full service grooming, dog training and water sports department. To mark its arrival to the south, Petco spent the weekend conducting family and pet-friendly activities.

Petco has a “Think Adoption First” philosophy, which means it strongly recommends that anyone looking to add a new pet to their family consider adopting a companion animal in need of a loving home, rather than purchasing one — even from a Petco store. The retailer is committed to scaling back the overpopulation of homeless animals in Puerto Rico through education and awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering.

Petco was founded in 1965 and currently has more than 1,250 stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, where it arrived in December 2012 with a store in San Juan.
