SBA selects Dorado entrepreneur as P.R.’s ‘Small Business Person of the Year’

The U.S. Small Business Administration has selected pharmacist Mariely Díaz, president and CEO of Optima Fusion Pharmacy Inc. in Dorado, as Puerto Rico’s Small Business Person of the Year, the agency announced Tuesday.

She, along with winners from across the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, will be honored at the SBA’s National Small Business Week events May 16-20 in Washington, D.C.
Under the theme “Empowering Entrepreneurs,” a series of events and educational forums will mark the 58th anniversary of the agency and the 48th annual proclamation of National Small Business Week.
Díaz heads the single-location pharmacy established in Dorado in 2004. The company generates a reported $10.5 million in annual sales and employs nearly 40 people, including several doctors in pharmacy, licensed nurses, pharmacy technicians and sales personnel.

Díaz is the only pharmacist in Puerto Rico to be certified by the National Home Infusion
Association. She is also vice president of Puerto Rico Specialty Pharmacy Health Services
(APFSES), an organization that actively works for the modernization and changing of the laws governing the practice of pharmaceutical sciences in Puerto Rico.

“The state small business winners who will be honored reflect a broad range of business products, services and innovations offered by our nation’s entrepreneurs. They include a pediatric outpatient clinic, technology solutions company, gourmet chocolate company, ‘green’ commercial cleaning company, and an educational publisher,” the SBA said in a statement released Tuesday.
