This year marks UPS’s 30 years of operations in Puerto Rico, where it has achieved sustainable growth and shown a “commitment to service excellence on the island,” company officials announced Wednesday.

The company established its operations in 1985 with 60 employees, offering delivery service to and from the U.S. mainland. Fast-forward three decades, and now UPS Puerto Rico employs a workforce of nearly 450 and delivers packages to 220 countries and territories from its gateway facility in San Juan.

The company’s delivery fleet comprises more than 170 vehicles, featuring satellite monitoring to track its freight.

For shipments outside of Puerto Rico, UPS offers three daily flights to its stateside hubs in Louisville, KY and Jacksonville, FL. The company uses an Airbus A-300 and MD-11 aircraft especially reconfigured for quick loading and unloading capabilities.

In addition to its six operating facilities located throughout the island in the municipalities of Arecibo, Caguas, Mayagüez, Ponce, San Juan and Toa Baja, the company also operates a healthcare-dedicated building in San Juan.

The facility offers logistics solution for pharmaceutical products including storage and distribution. Furthermore, UPS offers customers access to its portfolio of freight services through its supply chain solutions facility.

Beyond its logistics product portfolio, UPS Puerto Rico’s social responsibility is also an area that has played a major role in the company’s success, executives said.

In 2014, UPS employees dedicated more than 2,500 hours in volunteer efforts. Additionally, the company supports nonprofit organizations through donations made by its philanthropic division, the UPS Foundation. To date, the company has donated $3.5 million to community organizations in Puerto Rico.

“At UPS, corporate social responsibility is part of our culture. Excellence goes beyond the services we provide to also fostering a close relationship with the community we serve, which has positioned us as leaders in our industry,” said José Oramas, general manager for UPS Puerto Rico.

Through the UPS Foundation, UPS Puerto Rico participates in several initiatives each year, such as “Regala un Día” (“Give a Day”), when for one day the entire company volunteers at a nonprofit organization. The company also participates in fundraising activities for the United Way Puerto Rico, which has acknowledged UPS as one of the leading contributors on the island.

“The success of UPS is not only based on incorporating new technology and expanding services to meet market needs, but it is also due to the commitment of our devoted employees, who go the extra mile to deliver on our promise of superior service,” added Oramas.
