The School of Aeronautics at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico and Airways New Zealand recently inaugurated the first training center for international air traffic control, the first of its kind on the island and the Latin American region.

The center is the first to operate training facilities for international air traffic control with resources for teaching aerodrome simulators and radar systems, quality control and training support for international students, university officials said.

“Today is a very important day for the internalization of Puerto Rico and Inter American University,” said Augustine Echevarría, interim president of Inter American University. “With the opening of this modern training center, the School of Aeronautics of Inter American University of Puerto Rico and Airways New Zealand have established one of the most important training centers for the education of aviation professionals in Latin America.”

“I’m sure that the world-renowned Airways New Zealand will boost the arrival of international students,” he said.

Airways New Zealand is an entity leading in navigational aerial commercial services, and a leader in commercial aviation in the world, operating in New Zealand as a state-owned enterprise.

Airways New Zealand provides training in air traffic control and engineering, as well as flight performance, navigation services and consulting services in over 65 countries.

“It is a pleasure to be back in Puerto Rico for the launch of this program. We are delighted to be working with an organization as prestigious as the Inter American University,” said Sharon Cooke, of Airways New Zealand.

“Airways track-record in the provision of world-class Air traffic Control training and technologies combined with Inter American’s wider aviation portfolio and educational leadership in the region, sees this partnership will placed for success,” she said.

The new training center’s simulators will provide realism and three-dimensional high-definition graphics as well as full emulation airspace, said Juan F. Martinez, chancellor of the Bayamon Campus of Inter American University of Puerto Rico.

“A very important fact is that the trainings that will be offered in the new training center will comply with the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization,” he said.
