Puerto Rican manufacturer Bettina Cosmetics announced a $2 million investment in improvements, machinery and equipment as part of its agreement with the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company to move into new facilities in Dorado.

The move from its former 9,675 square-foot facilities into the new 22,663 square-foot building will also add 12 new jobs to its current payroll of 38, said Bettina Mercado, company president.

The creator of the Bettina-brand nail polish carries out industrial mixing, filling, labeling, packing, shipping and disposal of hazardous materials and quality control at the plant. It also does packing, packaging, sale and distribution of the cosmetics line including liquid and solid foundations, pressed powder, blush, shadows, mascaras, eyeliners and pencils, among others.

The new location will allow an increase in the company’s production capacity to 6.5 million units of enamel, tripling the current 2-million units produced, over a one-year period. The projected increase in production in turn will allow the company to meet its export projections in the short and medium term.

Currently, 93 percent of local production remains on the island and 7 percent is exported to Florida through Rosama Distributors, she said.

In 2015, Bettina Cosmetics will be exporting to Venezuela, Panama and Costa Rica, as well as other Latin American countries with which it is currently negotiating. The company has also landed contracts to manufacture private-label nail polish brands.

Meanwhile, for the past year, the company has been buying its labels, carton displays and unit packaging boxes from local suppliers.

Bettina Cosmeticss was founded 50 years ago by a couple in Mayagüez.
