A group of Doral Bank employees held a news conference Thursday, urging Gov. Alejandro García-Padilla to stop the government’s “attack” on their workplace, and “save their jobs.”

In a letter sent to the governor, the employees explained their dedication to their work and their communities, saying Doral are “part of Puerto Rico and its future.”

“Many of us have worked at Doral for many years, helping thousands and thousands of Puerto Rican families, like ours, reach their dream of owning homes. Over the years, we have been recognized as a community bank, defending just causes and pursuing initiatives related to cancer, the environment, the arts, education and the home,” the letter states.

“Mr. Governor, now that the court of justice has decided the controversy through a fair process and has ruled that Doral is right, we request that you consider carefully that Doral is the company for which we work and where we earn the bread we feed our children. We want to work and contribute to Puerto Rico,” the letter further noted.

Getting employees to step up on its behalf is Doral’s latest salvo in a fight that began earlier this year, when the Treasury Department nulled a tax reimbursement agreement that would have given back $229 million to the bank. The matter was taken up in court, which last week gave Doral the legal win.

Treasury has said it will appeal the court’s decision.
