18 future environmental pros get Toyota Foundation grants

Nancy Naval, director of sales and marketing at Toyota de Puerto Rico

Eighteen students enrolled in college curriculums related to the environment were the recipients of the latest round of scholarships awarded through the Toyota Foundation as part of its commitment to the protection of resources and ecological causes in Puerto Rico.

Students from Aguadilla, Añasco, Arecibo, Barceloneta, Barranquitas, Caguas, Ceiba, Gurabo, Hormigueros, Isabela, Patillas, San Juan and Yabucoa each received a $2,500 grant to support their university studies for the 2012-2013 school year. Some of the supported professions are: Biology, Coastal Marine Biology, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Geology, Horticulture, Engineering Chemistry, Microbiology, and Environmental Technology.

The Toyota Foundation’s Environmental Grants program was established to encourage interest among students to pursue studies in areas that help the environment. It also seeks to develop in young people the ability to contribute to Puerto Rico’s environmental development in professions related to ecology.

“At a time when the environmental issue has become a priority for the island, given the great ecological challenges that exist worldwide, today more than ever we reaffirm our commitment to support those outstanding youth looking to embark in careers related to the environment,” said Nancy Naval, director of sales and marketing at Toyota de Puerto Rico.

Eight of the students started college this year and are receiving the scholarship for the first time, while the remaining 10 students will be renewing the financial benefit to continue and complete their studies.

Since its establishment in 1997, the Toyota Foundation has awarded nearly $350,000 in scholarships advancing the environmental careers of nearly 130 students.
