Abarca lanza los programas de atención Better Balance y Better Access

Abarca’s headquarters in San Juan.

Abarca has announced the launch of two new programs, Better Balance and Better Access, expanding its Better Care solutions as the pharmacy benefit manager moves toward a more integrated, data-driven approach to health care delivery, the company said.

The programs are intended to address rising specialty drug costs and the growing prevalence of chronic conditions by strengthening clinical decision-making, improving medication adherence and expanding access to lower-cost pharmacy channels through partnerships, according to Abarca.

Better Balance focuses on cardiometabolic care, including diabetes, obesity, hypertension and management of weight loss drugs. Developed in partnership with digital health company Welldoc, the program combines artificial intelligence-based tools with Abarca’s real-time clinical data to provide personalized support and proactive interventions, the company said.

Abarca said the model is designed to improve health outcomes while reducing avoidable emergency department visits and hospitalizations.

By integrating ongoing monitoring of lab results and biometric indicators with targeted outreach, the program seeks to lower the total cost of care and support performance across quality measures, the company said.

Abarca added that the initiative is intended to ensure members receive appropriate interventions when needed, supporting longer-term care management.

Better Access focuses on pharmacy fulfillment and the member experience through collaborations with specialty pharmacy technology platform Free Market Health and Amazon Pharmacy. The program is designed to streamline the specialty pharmacy process from prescription to delivery, expand access to home delivery and increase pricing transparency without disrupting continuity of care, according to the company.

“Pharmacy benefit management is no longer just about processing claims, securing network discounts or collecting rebates,” said Javier González, president of PBM and commercial strategy at Abarca. “The new frontier is about delivering better total cost of care and better outcomes.”

González said the two programs are intended to modernize both clinical care and pharmacy delivery.

“With Better Balance and Better Access, we’re not simply launching new programs — we’re reshaping the clinical and delivery infrastructure to meet members where they are,” he said.

The initiatives build on Abarca’s existing Better Care solutions and support what the company described as a broader shift toward health intelligence and value-based pharmacy benefit management.
