Academia Tommie Hernández debuts new fashion talent

Emerging designers from Academia Tommie Hernández take the stage during Puerto Rico Fashion Week, presenting their first collections as part of the academy’s certification program.

Sixteen students from Academia Tommie Hernández made their debut as designers during Puerto Rico Fashion Week, presenting their first collections as the culmination of the academy’s Apparel Design & Patternmaking and Swimwear Design & Patternmaking certification programs.

“In our certifications, students learn to draft patterns, create samples, achieve proper fit and apply everything in a final runway show that gives them a real-world professional experience,” said designer and academy director Tommie Hernández. “It is deeply satisfying to help prepare these future designers and see them ready to succeed in the industry.”

The 12-month certification program, offered in person and online, included participants from Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas. Each student developed a collection of eight looks and constructed three final pieces, drawing inspiration from Puerto Rican culture and nature, mid-century glamour, Gaudí’s architecture and Taíno heritage.

A panel of judges selected winners in two categories. In Apparel, Elizabeth Rolón took first place, followed by Karal Morales and Nancy Pérez. In Swimwear, the top prize went to Alanis Guilfuchi, followed by Valerie Figueroa and Yamiria Pacheco. Mayra Moreno, Isabel Hernández and Kenia Romero received Total Look Awards, with special recognition given to Emmarie Vélez.

“These awards are a great opportunity for students to start selling their pieces and promoting their brands, taking their first steps as entrepreneurs,” Hernández said.
