Aguadilla airport cargo rises 7.6% in September

The Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

The Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, recorded a 7.6% year-over-year increase in air cargo traffic in September, signaling continued growth for the facility and Puerto Rico’s logistics sector, the Puerto Rico Ports Authority announced.

Nearly 10.7 million pounds of cargo were handled in September 2025, up from 9.9 million pounds during the same month in 2024. From January through September, the airport processed 107.1 million pounds, a 3.4% increase over the 103.6 million pounds reported during the same period last year.

“Since January, the Ports Authority team has been working tirelessly to refurbish all of our airports, both regional and international,” said Executive Director Norberto Negrón.

“The work at Rafael Hernández International Airport, with a total investment exceeding $5 million, is modernizing this important airport facility,” he said.

Negrón said those improvements have contributed to stronger cargo activity during the first nine months of the year.

“The numbers not only surpassed those of 2024 but also demonstrated the enormous potential this airport has as an economic platform for the entire western region of Puerto Rico,” he said.

September, typically a slower month for cargo, exceeded expectations, Negrón added.

Since February, the Ports Authority has coordinated the Air Cargo Working Group, a government initiative to expand freight operations and strengthen logistics capacity across Puerto Rico.

In addition, a nearly $1.2 million project will upgrade airport security with new internet-connected surveillance cameras powered by solar energy and a centralized monitoring system. The project complements nearly $4 million previously allocated to refurbish the airport’s air traffic control tower.
