American Institute of Architects’ Puerto Rico Chapter recently celebrated its annual “Honor Awards” to recognize architectural design excellence on the island, granting one of its highest distinctions to Universal Insurance’s Canóvanas customer service branch.

This year’s judges were architects Allan Shulman, Roney Mateu and Willy Bermello, who picked the winners announced Sept. 28, during the AIAPR’s annual convention.

Universal Group developed an expansion strategy that placed regional customer service facilities in key locations across the island. The main challenge in designing these facilities was to develop a cohesive architectural vocabulary and corporate identity that makes their structures are easily identifiable by their customers throughout the island.

“This recognition reaffirms our strategy to create spaces specifically designed to provide service to our customers that are comfortable and equipped with technological advances that facilitate their transactions,” said Monique Miranda, chief executive of Universal.

This is the second Universal project that has received an award. In 2008, the Mayagüez customer service center took second place in the Premio Obra Cemex XVII competition’s commercial category.
