Amgen Juncos facility earns EPA’s Energy Star certification for efficiency
Amgen Manufacturing Limited LLC has received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification for its facility in Juncos, Puerto Rico, placing it among the most energy-efficient biomanufacturing sites in the United States, the company announced.
“Amgen Manufacturing Limited is pleased to accept the EPA’s Energy Star certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said Thomas Seewoester, vice president of operations for Amgen Puerto Rico. “Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while reducing our energy costs.”
To qualify for the Energy Star label, facilities must score 75 or higher on the EPA’s energy performance scale, placing them in the top 25% of comparable U.S. facilities. The score is based on actual energy consumption and verified through third-party audits to ensure compliance with standards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the International Energy Conservation Code.
Amgen said the Juncos site reached the threshold through energy audits and upgrades to systems including HVAC, lighting and production equipment. The company also implemented smart energy management tools, improved insulation and adopted high-efficiency technologies to reduce overall consumption.
Company officials said the certification reflects ongoing efforts to improve sustainability across operations and reduce long-term operating costs. To retain the designation, the facility must continue to monitor and maintain performance in future evaluations.
