Popular Inc. President Richard Carrión and Extra Bases founder Carlos Delgado are all smiles during the news conference to announce the fundraising campaign.

The Banco Popular Foundation has teamed up with El Mesón Sándwiches to support the “Home Run por el Futuro” (“Home Run for the Future”) effort, whose mission is to raise funds for the Extra Bases Foundation, run by former Puerto Rican baseball great Carlos Delgado.

The money collected will be used to build a shelter for pregnant teens as well as provide sporting equipment to Fundación 2010, which supports the development of young athletes across different disciplines.

“For us at the Banco Popular Foundation it is important to support program initiatives that not only promote sport in the community, but those that promote, among children and young people, the development of disciplines that make them better citizens,” said Popular Inc. President Richard Carrión.

For this effort, El Mesón Sándwiches has created the “Extra Bases Sándwich” which will be sold at the chain’s 36 local restaurants. The company will donate $1 for each sandwich sold. The goal is to collect $500,000 from sales, as well as donations, the Popular 5K Race and from El Mesón itself.

“I am honored to once again join the Banco Popular Foundation and be part of this great team and be able to help a high-caliber foundation such as Extra Bases, led by a special human being who is committed to youth, such as Carlos Delgado,” said Felipe Pérez-Grajales, president of El Mesón Sándwiches.

The campaign will end Aug. 24.
