Bayamón Mayor Ramón Luis Rivera-Cruz, and Doral Bank announced Tuesday that 25 women with artistic abilities will participate in a free three-month educational program by the Art Workshop to further encourage and enhance the participants’ artistic abilities and techniques.

The program that will start in January 2014, is among a number of initiatives designed to encourage and empower women to develop their own business.

“The idea is to open up avenues for self-employment for women with artistic interests. Women represent an important but often underutilized force in an economy. In Puerto Rico, where we all are trying to create a stronger economy, women can and should play a vibrant role,” the mayor said.

“Entrepreneurship offers the potential of capital creation and jobs — all of which enhance the well being of the community. Art Workshop is being undertaken to help women realize their economic potential through their artistic capabilities, including the possibility of establishing their own business in a related work field,” Rivera-Cruz said.

In addition, Bayamón will waive its registration tax for participants who have their small businesses, so that they have the chance to promote the city’s economic development.

“With this unique program, Doral is adding another important dimension to its community ‘Mujeres d Éxito’ initiative. Doral is committed to encouraging entrepreneurial development among women in Puerto Rico by providing important business development tools,” said Jesús Méndez, executive vice president for Doral’ Puerto Rico operations. “As women receive more opportunities to become entrepreneurs, Puerto Rico’s economy increases its potential.”

To qualify to participate in the Art Workshop candidates must have artistic ability, demonstrate economic need, and be a resident of Bayamón.
