GDB’s Berrocal Institute opens internship program
Twenty-six Puerto Rican students and two foreign students, from Spain and from the People’s Republic of China, will be taking part in the internship program this year, GDB President Melba Acosta (center) said.
The José M. Berrocal Institute for Economics and Finance, a subsidiary of the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico, this week welcomed 28 talented college students to its 13th internship program, which will provide them a professional development opportunity in the different government agencies.
“It’s very gratifying to be able to offer these talented youth the unique experience of working in the different government agencies. This opportunity will allow them to learn the complexity of the fiscal work the government carries out,” GDB President Melba Acosta said.
During the first few days, before they start working at their assigned agencies, the interns will be participating in different orientation sessions offered by GDB Chairman David Chafey, Senate President Eduardo Bhatia, Antonio García-Padilla, Dean Emeritus of the School of Law of the University of Puerto Rico, and Fernando Lloveras-San Miguel, executive director of the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, among others.
Twenty-six Puerto Rican students and two foreign students, from Spain and from the People’s Republic of China, will be taking part in the internship program this year. The interns come from the different campuses of the UPR, the Inter American University, the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, New York University College of the Arts and Science, Haverford College, and the Italian Lyceum in Madrid.
Students will spend eight weeks in their assigned places of work. Participating government agencies are: GDB, Economic Development Bank for Puerto Rico, Treasury Department, Puerto Rico Trade and Export, Office of Management and Budget and the Puerto Rico Museum of Art.
“The main goal of the Berrocal Institute is to recruit young talent to work in the public sector, and to help train new government employees. We hope to encourage them, through this experience, to offer their talent to public service in the future,” Acosta said.
The Berrocal Institute was created to complement the GDB’s mission of fostering economic development by providing specialized training in the theory and practice of public finances and economy.
