A former estate that was once part of the former Aguirre Sugar Mill in Salinas will be converted into the Casa Aguirre Bed & Breakfast by a group of young entrepreneurs that aims to highlight the historical, ecological and cultural importance of the southern town.

The group aims to contribute in this way to provide sustainable solutions to the people of Salinas, one of the municipalities with the highest poverty rate on the island. In addition to the hostelry, the site will serve as space for meetings and community workshops.

Community brigades have been organized to spruce up the property, and have also begun fundraising campaign via www.antrocket.com/es/casaaguirre to finance their venture.

The project has the endorsement of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, and is split into three phases. The first is to equip and furnish the property and outfit it with a pleasing aesthetic, to receive guests and carry out activities and meetings. The second and third stages of the business plan include the construction of additional rooms and building a “fab lab” available to community organizations and other groups.

“Our venture will also integrate young people from nearby communities that are currently completing their certification as guides-interpreters from the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources as part of the activities and offers that we will present to visitors,” said Yamil Colón, one of the project developers.

“We invite people who support sustainable tourism to learn about the project through social networks, communicate with us, and above all to visit us and become partners through a donation to be part of the socio-economic efforts we so badly need as an island,” Colón added.
