Chamber to host healthcare and insurance conference

The CofC is focusing its attention on healthcare and insurance issues during next month's event.

The Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce (CofC) is inviting the local business community to the Puerto Rico Healthcare & Insurance Conference 2012 “Economic Transformation in Health,” slated for Feb. 2 at the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino.

The event being coordinated in conjunction with the University of Miami Business Administration School (UMSBA) and will cover topics related to healthcare management in Puerto Rico and its impact on the economy. Local and national experts will present their perspective on the healthcare situation, while attendees will participate in roundtables to discuss their ideas.

“One of the top priorities in my agenda is healthcare, being that the changes happening locally and nationally directly impact the way we do business in Puerto Rico. Healthcare services represent more than $12 billion to our economy and are a key source of employment,” CofC President Salvador Calaf-Legrand said, noting that industry experts, as well as public and private entities, are supporting the event.

Among the topics to be covered are: current demographic factors and their impact on healthcare; an update on the healthcare reform; a report from the White House healthcare task force; the hospital of the future and the integration of the technology to healthcare management.

Speakers include Jaime R. Torres, regional director of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department; Steve Ullmann, professor and director of the Health Policies and Administration Programs of the UMSBA; Attorney Rafael Cox Alomar who is running for the Resident Commissioner post under the Popular Democratic Party; and Health Secretary Lorenzo González-Feliciano.
