Claro, AT&T beef up handset portfolios with new devices

The island’s top two wireless carriers introduced more than a handful of devices Thursday, keeping up with their commitments to offer island customers the latest in mobile technology.

During a morning news conference, Claro teamed up with equipment maker Samsung to unveil four new Galaxy smartphones to cater to virtually every demographic. The trendy Galaxy Ace, the Galaxy Pro for the business user, the Galaxy Fit for the adventurous techie and the Galaxy Mini for the social butterfly.

“The Samsung Galaxy family broadens our Android smartphones offer,” said Claro President Enrique Ortiz de Montellano, during a morning event at a San Juan restaurant. “With this array of devices we continue to firmly set the pace in Puerto Rico with innovative equipment supported by our strong network.”

The Samsung Galaxy smartphones integrate Wi-Fi, 3G and Social Hub capabilities to allow users to remain constantly connected and be able to manage their social networks, send short and instant messaging, surf the web and receive email instantly. The Android 2.2-based devices also feature Android Market, the gateway to more than 150,000 applications, as well as Samsung Apps and Claro’s Ideas portal.

In a separate announcement, Claro also unveiled the HTC Desire and HTC Desire A smartphones, two devices also known for providing easy access to social networks and their capacity to combine and organize the user’s contacts. Both phones integrate large touchscreens, Android operating systems, a 5-megapixel cameras, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities, among an array of features.

HP Veer 4G

Meanwhile, the island’s largest carrier, AT&T moved forward with the pledge it made in January to introduce 20 4G devices this year with the addition of the HP Veer 4G smartphone to its portfolio. The device is the size of a credit card and no thicker than a deck of cards, and offers access to the web, apps, social networks and more. It weighs in at a mere 3.6 ounces.

Powered by HP webOS, Veer offers an advanced browser and fast processor for an enhanced web experience including Adobe Flash support, plus 8GB of internal user storage and a full keyboard that slides out for fast texting and email.
