Claro increases speed on 5G network after spectrum optimization
Telecommunications provider Claro Puerto Rico announced it has increased its 5G mobile network speeds by 250%, following its islandwide deployment of 5G Clean Carrier technology.
The upgrade is part of the company’s $160 million investment plan for 2024, aimed at improving both mobile and fixed network infrastructure, Claro said.
The term 5G Clean Carrier represents a commitment to quality and efficiency in mobile service, officials said. It refers to the exclusive use of spectrum for 5G technology to maximize its potential and improve network efficiency, resulting in improved connection speed and quality for customers.
“Since late 2023, we’ve been working diligently on this project, starting with pilot tests in the southern region, where we were able to see a significant improvement in our customers’ experience,” said Claro CEO Enrique Ortiz de Montellano.
“Last February, we began the massive deployment of this technology on our network, managing to complete it by the end of March. With a clean and dedicated spectrum, we have greater capacity to offer the endless range of services that 5G technology allows. Accordingly, we have increased the speed for customers connected to our 5G by 2.5 times, providing a smoother and faster browsing experience,” he explained.
The shift to a 5G-dedicated network doesn’t only improve mobile customer service, it also fosters new opportunities for business, industrial automation, telemedicine, smart transportation, and various innovative uses that utilize the high-speed and low-latency benefits of 5G, added Ortiz de Montellano.
Claro has also expanded its mmWave 5G band to more than 50 sites across Puerto Rico, including tourist spots and entertainment areas like the Puerto Rico Coliseum, Placita de Santurce, the Convention Center District and Paseo Tablado de Guaynabo.
The mmWave 5G technology enhances the capability for more devices to connect at once and provides browsing speeds up to 1 gigabyte, which means reduced latency and better performance over previous mobile technologies.
