Claro Puerto Rico, a unit of América Móvil, announced Thursday the launch of its (Claro)RED initiative that coupled with the (RED) Rush to Zero campaign, seeks to eradicate the AIDS virus by 2015.

To do its part, Claro Puerto Rico has joined forces with equipment manufacturers BlackBerry, Sony Mobile, Samsung, LG, Nokia and HTC to offer a line of products that will leverage resources and support this cause. These products will be offered through Claro’s retail outlets throughout the island.

Furthermore, America Movil and Claro have agreed to contribute $1 million annually until 2015 to contribute to the cause and help finance the Global Fund in Africa and Latin America.

“With (Claro)RED products and services the scope of our commitment to society have spread globally so both companies and users can fight together against one of the ills affecting the world and thousands of people every day,” said Claro Puerto Rico President Enrique Ortiz de Montellano.

“It is a historic opportunity to help eradicate one of the diseases that has done most harm to our society, which is why we invite our users and the general public to join in the activities related to the campaign (RED), and to learn about the mobile equipment that contribute to the cause,” he added.

In addition to Claro, all América Móvil subsidiaries have joined this initiative, driven by the Carlos Slim Fundation. Mexican magnate Slim owns América Móvil. To mark its participation in the global campaign, Claro Puerto Rico has modified its logo to reflect is commitment.
