Colgate and Walmart Puerto Rico recently joined forces in a fundraiser through which they collected $5,000 that were donated to nonprofit Enactus Puerto Rico, to support sustainable development projects in economically disadvantage communities on and off the island.

During the month of October, for each Colgate product sold at Walmart stores islandwide, 5 cents were earmarked for the Enactus mission that integrates college students and business leaders and academics on the island.

This year’s project, called “Bottle of Hope,” developed by the University of Puerto Rico in Bayamón, is focused on the construction of social housing using plastic bottles as the raw material.

A second project called “Harvest” was launched along with the housing initiative, to harvest corn, beans, vegetables, pigeon peas and peanuts. These vegetables will be sold to provide income to the community that already has contracts to sell the products that are being sown. The initiative has already been launched implemented in the province of San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic with an economic impact of more than $500,000.

The results of the project were presented several weeks ago, during the Enactus World Cup event, participated by 35 countries. The project managed to win the favor of more than 60 judges, who rated it as excellent for its ability to provide an innovative solution to a community in need, reaching the semifinals worldwide.

Puerto Rican youth presented their project with Tunisia, Malaysia and the eventual champion team from the United Kingdom.
