Costco Wholesale Corp. will finally be able to break ground on its first gasoline station in Puerto Rico, a $2.5 million project that recently got the go-ahead from the Puerto Rico Permits Management Office.

According to the permit, which was signed off by several agencies, including the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, the project will be located on the mega-retailer’s San Juan/Carolina property.

The plan for the Carolina store also appears to include a remodeling of its food court.

Attempts to get Costco — which does not grant media interviews — to provide further detail on the upcoming project were unsuccessful, as “it is our corporate policy to not comment on specific locations,” said Peggy-Jo Faria, corporate communications coordinator for Costco Wholesale Corporation.

Costco arrived on the island in 2001 and has four warehouse stores, in Carolina, Bayamón — where it has two — and Caguas.

Puerto Rico’s gasoline retail market is highly competitive, with hundreds of stations operated by major brands such as Puma, Shell and Gulf, as well as independents.

Who knew you could be so excited for a gasoline station!? I hope this pushes more gas stations to have pay at the pump now.
