DDEC, Polytechnic University team up on logistics ecosystem map

Sebastián Negrón-Reichard, secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce, speaks with a student involved in developing the Interactive Map of Puerto Rico’s Logistics and Cargo Ecosystem.

Puerto Rico’s Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC, in Spanish) and the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico have signed an agreement to create an interactive map of the island’s logistics and cargo ecosystem.

The initiative is part of the government’s strategy to position Puerto Rico as a leading air cargo hub in the Caribbean, officials said.

Students at the Polytechnic University will lead the programming of the tool, which will compile updated data on infrastructure, routes, certifications, operators and freight capacities.

“The development of the Interactive Map of Puerto Rico’s Logistics and Cargo Ecosystem will maximize the opportunities offered by transshipment flexibility for foreign airlines operating in Puerto Rico,” said Gov. Jenniffer González.

DDEC Secretary Sebastián Negrón-Reichard said the project will help “more accurately identify routes, distribution centers and key points to boost the competitiveness of the productive sector,” while also involving students in real-world economic development efforts.

University President Ernesto Vázquez-Martínez highlighted the collaboration’s educational value, saying the work will help students develop technical, leadership and civic engagement skills.

The map is in the data-gathering phase, supported by an open request for information, as previously informado by News is my Business. Once completed, the tool will integrate more than 150 components of Puerto Rico’s logistics ecosystem and serve as a centralized platform to help stakeholders make better-informed decisions about cargo movement.
