San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz tries her hand at dominoes, going against Oscar Navarro, president of the Puerto Rico National Domino Federation.

More than 1,000 players from 21 countries will converge in San Juan participate in the 12th World Championship Domino tournament, from July 26 to Aug. 2, municipal and competition authorities announced.

The event is expected to pump $1.5 million into the San Juan economy, Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said.

“More than 1,000 players from Abkhazia, Algeria, Aruba, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Russia, Saint Lucia, Spain, Ukraine, United States and Venezuela will gather here with their families, friends and special guests from the various associations, which will have an economic impact on San Juan and Puerto Rico of about $1.5 million and more than 2,000 hotel nights,” she said at a press conference at Plaza Colón, which will be one of the scenarios for this event.

The tournament will have categories for four-player teams, pairs and individuals and will be held at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino in the Convention Center District in San Juan. The opening ceremony will include a parade of visiting countries with their flags through the streets of Old San Juan, departing from Plaza Colón to the Paseo La Princesa,” said Lucas Guittard, president of the International Domino Federation.

“The event will include competitions among fans that will take place in different public squares in Old San Juan on the nights the world competitions are happening,” Guittard said. “There will also be competitions among celebrities, as well as an invitational among artists, the press and athletes so they can play a mini championship in a public place so that people can see them participate.”

The winning team in this qualifier event will move on to the world championship event in Mexico.
