Issues and challenges related to drinking water, climate change and its impact on water bodies, new water purification technologies will be some of the main discussions of the XII Puerto Rican Congress of Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Sciences that will be held March 4-6 at the Metropolitan Campus of the Inter American University.

Under the theme “Water: Innovative Strategies to Meet the Challenges of the XXI Century,” the Interamerican Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Sciences Association (known as AIDIS-Puerto Rico) will bring together scientists and professionals from 10 countries, such as Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela, which will also address concerns of emerging pathogens and the implications this will have for future amendments to Environmental Protection Agency rules.

“This Congress will allow local public health and environmental engineering professionals to explore new horizons by exporting their services to Latin America and the Caribbean,” said José Casas, president of AIDIS.

The symposium will conclude with a panel entitled “Past, Present and Future of Water and Sewer Authority of Puerto Rico (70 years improving public health in Puerto Rico).” Five former directors and current Executive Director, Alberto Lázaro, will discuss the most significant events and challenges during their term at PRASA. The former executive directors who will participate are engineers Pedro Hernández-Vega, María Margarita Irizarry, Benjamín Pomales, Emilio Colón and Jorge Rodríguez.

Amendments to the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board’s underground storage tanks regulations and new criteria for water quality standards will also be discussed.
