DTOP hosting workshops on P.R.’s long-range transportation strategy

Workshop schedule and locations

The Department of Transportation and Public Works announced Thursday it will be conducting seven workshops to discuss Puerto Rico long-range transportation strategy, with the goal of getting citizen input. The workshops will take place May 1-3 at locations across Puerto Rico, the agency known as DTOP said.

The workshops will be in an “open house” format, so that interested people can attend at any time and stay as long as they prefer. There will be exhibits describing the purpose of the plans and showing transportation information for each planning region, and there will be members of the agency’s planning team available to discuss the plans.

“Public input is a very important part of this process, and attendance is encouraged,” the agency said in a release inviting the general public, as well as representatives of municipalities, private organizations, and government agencies to attend.

During the first round of meetings, the agency seeks to discuss the island’s transportation isuses and needs, split into seven regions. DTOP will follow up with two more workshop sessions to discuss possible improvement alternatives for the regional transportation networks, and to present the proposed elements of the final transportation plans.

The Puerto Rico Metropolitan Planning Organization is working with DTOP, the Highways and Transportation Authority and its Office of Strategic Planning, and a consultant to prepare the long-range transportation plans.

The island’s transportation plans are updated periodically as required by Federal transportation regulations, and will determine priorities for future transportation improvements.
