More than 200 Peñuelas and Guayanilla elementary public school students and teachers recently took an “environmental oath” reaffirming their commitment to the environment as part of EcoEléctrica energy’s educational program, “EcoHéroes.”

The achievement day marked the culmination of the first phase of an initiative implemented during the past school year that aims to educate children about important aspects of natural resources conservation, the benefits of clean energy production, the importance of recycling to save the planet and to provide trainings to students and educators. The program provides educational and environmental support to the towns of Peñuelas and Guayanilla.

“We worked hard and in partnerships so that our multiple initiatives for the environment have had a favorable impact on our resources, the preservation of the species and of course, the quality of life of our neighbors and the island,” said Yamaris Alancastro, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at EcoEléctrica.

“Today is a day to celebrate many achievements, the main one being that you have become our environmental emissaries. We know you will be the first to defend our resources and share what they have learned with their families and their communities,” she said, referring to the 200 students from 12 elementary schools in the aforementioned towns during the ceremony held recently at the Teatro Centro Escolar José A. Giovannetti in Yauco.

Alancastro said the program enabled EcoEléctrica to create strong alliances with experts from the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, Environmental Quality Board and the Solid Waste Management Authority. The EcoHéroes program will now enter into a second phase, incorporating high schoolers from Peñuelas and Guayanilla.
