The President of the Puerto Rico Economists’ Association, Juan Villeta-Trigo, met Monday with Marie Donnay, economist and representative of the Mission of the General Directorate for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Union to discuss the island’s fiscal situation and exchange strategies focused on achieving economic growth.
Donnay’s visit responds to an initiative of the Leadership Program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State International Visitors.
“Meetings and exchanges like this are vital as we live in a globalized economy. Puerto Rico cannot focus only on the discussion of local economic issues such as public finance and fiscal reforms,” Villeta siad.
“We are part of a global economy, interconnected by our imports and exports. In addition, migration and an aging population are common realities that affect the economy of all countries. Given this, we need to foster partnership, promote regional and international trade and join forces in coalitions that are of mutual benefit,” he added.
The economics professor also pointed out that in recent years, the association he presides has broadened its horizons and promoted partnerships with Panama, Cuba, Israel and the entire European continent, including Spain.
The Mission seeks to help raise the economic welfare of the citizens of the European Union to promote competitive and rich economies, employment, and promote policies oriented smart and sustainable economic development while financial and macroeconomic stability are preserved.
