EVERTEC is encouraging employees to act in a friendly manner with the environment.

Puerto Rican transaction processing company EVERTEC is moving forward with its eco-friendly corporate social responsibility program, establishing parking for hybrid cars and conducting awareness events for its 1,600 employees who so far have collected 232,771 pounds of materials in its recycling center and operational areas.

“In EVERTEC, we’re committed to conducting our business operations in a balanced manner consistent with environmental protection,” said Wanda Betancourt, first vice president of communications and marketing at EVERTEC.

“We recognize that we have a responsibility to both our employees and the local community. That’s why we implemented the ‘Orange Revolution Program,’ through which we’ve raised awareness among employees about environmental protection and motivated them to engage in activities related to the cause,” she said.

The “Orange Revolution Program” began in 2007 as an initiative to motivate EVERTEC employees to participate in activities related to protecting the environment, such as recycling, maintenance of natural areas, mass transportation and supporting community events.

“Last year we collected 650,655 pounds of materials in our recycling center and in our operational areas. These materials included paper, plastic, newspapers, magazines, wood pallets and electronic equipment,” said Betancourt.

The institutional program also encompasses other efforts, namely celebrating “Earth Hour,” environmental fairs, lectures, excursions to nature reserves, planting trees, cleaning beaches, contests, internal energy conservation campaigns and reducing the use of paper, and celebrating “World Recycling Day,” during which EVERTEC collected 1,291 pounds of electronic waste this year.

The company also recycles paper and obsolete electronic equipment and controls energy consumption through the installation of movement sensors.

“We seek to motivate employees to become active agents of great social change for the planet and we are achieving it,” said Betancourt.
