Wireless competitors AT&T and T-Mobile announced expansions to their Puerto Rico 4G LTE networks, which for the latter carrier also represented adding new jobs in the area of customer service.

T-Mobile, which began rolling out its 4G LTE network three months ago, confirmed Wednesday it has completed the second phase of its expansion, representing a 50 percent increase in its 4G LTE coverage that now serves about 60 percent of the island’s population. In this phase, the towns of Trujillo Alto, Toa Baja, Toa Alta, Río Grande, Canóvanas, Aguas Buenas, Hormigueros and Juana Díaz are covered, as well as high-traffic areas and urban centers including Old San Juan, Plaza Las Américas, the Puerto Rico Coliseum and the Mayagüez mall.

“The focus of our expansion project is not only in geographical areas, but to continue to invest, adding capacity in high traffic areas to provide a better customer experience,” said T-Mobile Puerto Rico’s General Manager Jorge Martel.

The expansion also spurred the addition of 52 new jobs in customer service, he noted.

Meanwhile, competitor AT&T announced it has turned on its 4G LTE network in Adjuntas, bringing customers the latest generation of wireless network technology that offers faster speeds, reliability, capacity for new devices and faster response times. For the carrier, using LTE means making more efficient use of its spectrum, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience.

“We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Adjuntas responds to what customers want from their mobile experience — more, faster, reliably, on the best devices,” said Ray Flores, AT&T regional vice president for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

AT&T has been extending its 4G LTE coverage throughout the island since January.
