Sam’s to export Puerto Rico-made burgers to Fla. clubs

Sam’s Club Regional General Manager, Carmen Kingston, announced Thursday the beginning of a program to export products made in Puerto Rico to its clubs in Florida, as part of an initiative focused on strengthening local industry and job creation.
Kingston said Sam’s reached an export agreement with “El Gordito de Marvel” to sell hamburgers and other frozen products at 15 clubs in Central Florida, where there is a significant Puerto Rican population.
“We are very proud to provide local entrepreneurs opportunities for growth through agreements like this, which also prove our commitment to them and our confidence in the quality of their products,” Kingston said.
Through this agreement, Sam’s Club Puerto Rico will export approximately 1,400 boxes of hamburgers on a monthly basis, which will improve sales for the native Puerto Rican manufacturer.
“We are very excited at Marvel about this initiative from Sam’s Club, which will allow their Central Florida clients to enjoy Puerto Ricans’ favorite hamburger. Sam’s Club Puerto Rico has always supported Marvel as a native Puerto Rican business. With the exportation of El Gordito products, that support of local industry reaches the next level,” said Mario Somoza, president of Marvel International.
Similarly, Francisco Chévere, executive director of the Puerto Rico Trade and Export Company, said “this effort to support our local companies by providing opportunities to expand their business outside of Puerto Rico should set an example for other foreign companies.”
Marvel International was founded in 1961 and was acquired in 2007 by B. Fernández & Hnos. Besides El Gordito hamburgers, it produces other brands, such as Filete, Gustosito and Economy. Marvel has all accreditations required by local and Federal governments and manufactures more than 150,000 pounds of product each week.
