A historic 3.8-acre property on which Laurance Rockefeller built his estate within one of the Caribbean’s most coveted stretches of oceanfront land, Dorado Beach, is now on the market for $8.5 million, Trillion Real Estate Group announced Thursday.
The firm, the exclusive Puerto Rico affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, said the property “presents an opportunity to build a dream home.”

The historically rich Dorado Beach is composed of 1,400 tropical acres some 21 miles west of San Juan. Owned by the Livingston family and used as a pineapple and coconut plantation in the early 1900s — during which time Amelia Earhart was known to have visited — the property was later sold by Clara Livingston to Rockefeller.
In the 1950s, with a focus on environmentally sound development, Rockefeller transformed much of the lush landscape into Puerto Rico’s most exclusive luxury resort, the Dorado Beach Hotel. Designed with the help of Henry Klumb — one of Puerto Rico’s most prominent 20th century architects — the resort, respected for its incorporation of natural elements, came to be known as a staple for celebrity and high-profile escapes.
While owned by Rockefeller, the Dorado Beach Hotel was visited by John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, the Kennedy’s, Joan Crawford, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, among many others. Today, the Dorado Beach hotel is Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve.
