Forum slated on sustainable farming and world wealth
Sustainable farming practices will be discussed during this week's forum.
“Agriculture: Sustainability and world wealth” is the theme of an upcoming forum that will explore farming as a necessary variable to achieve development, to combat hunger and create wealth. The event is slated for Oct. 20, starting at 8 a.m. at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus School of Education.
Event organizer Libia González said the event is “an interdisciplinary meeting organized in four panels composed of economists, agronomists, educators, entrepreneurs, journalists and farmers, which will address the issue of agriculture — its history, present and future projections.”
The event is open to the university community as well as the general public, she said.
“Putting into perspective the importance of agriculture as a major economic activity in the richest countries in the world and its projection into the future is the main theme of the forum, which aims to demonstrate the imperative need to develop agriculture in Puerto Rico and generate interest among students to learn and explore farming as a source of wealth,” she said.
Panelists will present new on agriculture and its role in the local and global economy as well as several proposals for the development of agriculture as a source livelihood and business in Puerto Rico.
The activity will be broken down into four panel discussions: Economy, agriculture and globalization: From the past to the present; Agriculture in Latin America and Puerto: Present and future; Industrial farming sector: Current perspectives in Puerto Rico; Media, trade and consumption of agricultural products: Local practices.
There will also be a presentation of the “Food Inc.” documentary and a farmers market.
The forum is sponsored by several UPR departments in Río Piedras and Mayagüez, the Puerto Rican Humanities Foundation, Moralón Focusing Heritage Inc., and the Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation.
