Following the successful completion of the implementation of sales process and service coordination systems at HIMA San Pablo to enable the hospital group enter the field of medical tourism, technology firm Fusionworks has expanded its own portfolio to assist other hospital groups do the same.

“The technological element on which we focus to equip other hospitals to compete is key for the development of this important export market that has a multimillion potential,” said Jorge Mejía, co-founder of Fusionworks Inc.

“Puerto Rico needs a public policy that supports our medical tourism to new scales. In Costa Rica, for example, according to the International Council for the Advancement of Medicine (Promed), there are 600 companies involved in this market, providing employment for 20,000 people. In addition, last year the country reached 36,000 consumers for medical services that generated $288 million. This is an economic trend that Puerto Rico cannot afford to ignore.”

One of the keys to being successful in this industry is incorporating technology in promotional efforts, sales and service process with patients.

“The message we are transmitting to other hospital groups is that for Puerto Rico to compete with the global leaders in medical tourism, hospital systems have to have technology as a primary tool, with an adequate system to promote sales and to coordinate and centralize all services,” he said.

With the right technology, local hospitals can compete with countries like Costa Rica, Mexico, Singapore, India and Colombia, where there has been an explosion of growth in that sector, Mejía added.
