Government Development Bank President Javier Ferrer announced Monday the start of the 11th José M. Berrocal Finance and Economy Institute internship program, with the participation of 30 college students attending Puerto Rico and stateside universities.

“For the eleventh year, we’re pleased to offer a unique opportunity to 30 outstanding college students with outstanding academic performance. Students were chosen from eight different majors at the undergraduate level, as well as law,” said Ferrer. “We’re pleased with the selection and certain that this experience will help them to understand the complexity of the work done by the government and the various agencies and know the important role they play.”

“This internship gives the student a much more accurate vision of the challenge of working with government finances. Today more than ever, Puerto Rico needs its best talent,” said Ferrer.

Students participating in the program are enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico’s Río Piedras, Cayey, Ponce, Arecibo, Bayamón and Mayagüez campuses, the Metropolitan university, the Inter American University Law School, as well as the Bayamón and Metro Area campuses, Villanova University, Cornell University, American University, Fairfield University, Tufts, Loyola Maryland and Wharton School-University of Pennsylvania.

The internship will run through July 24, during which high-ranking government officials as well as private sector executives and professors will offer conferences and supervise the students. Aside from the GDB, other participating agencies include the Treasury Department, the Economic Development and Commerce Department, the Office of Management and Budget, the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company and the Economic Development Bank.

The José M. Berrocal Finance and Economy Institute is a GDB subsidiary whose purpose is to provide outstanding students knowledge and experience in the areas of financing, finance, economics, accounting, marketing, human resources and public administration with particular emphasis on economic development.
