New Lexus Grants for Artists exhibit at the MAPR
The main theme of the exhibit is showing through Jan. 10, 2016 at the Bertita & Guillermo L. Martínez Gallery at the MAPR.
Jesús Manuel Gómez, Elizabeth Robles López and Eduardo Rosario-Rosario are the new breed of up-and-coming artists whose works of art make up “Weaving Webs of Discards,” the 11th exhibition of the Lexus “Grants for Artists” program at the Puerto Rico Museum of Art (MAPR for its initials in Spanish).
For the first time, the grantees accepted the challenge of using recyclable or reusable materials in their works, as part of Lexus’ commitment to evangelize a message of environmental awareness and conservation.
The main theme of the exhibit, showing through Jan. 10, 2016 at the Bertita & Guillermo L. Martínez Gallery at the MAPR, is the delicate state of the environment, which is why the works of art incorporate recyclable material, to emphasize this message.
“This exhibit uses art as means of expression through which each artist expresses his and her sentiments and thoughts on a variety of subjects. Also, the Lexus Grants for Artists program fulfills two important objectives for Lexus: make room for the country’s up-and-coming artists so that they may develop their careers, and strengthen our cultural wealth through the creation of first-rate art,” said Maribel Bengoa, marketing manager at Lexus Puerto Rico.
As winners of the 2014 Lexus Grants for Artists, Gómez, Robles and Rosario each received a $9,000 grant last year to create their works of art. The main requirement was to incorporate recyclable material in their proposals. Each work of art presents the artist’s unique perspective on the subject matter.
The Lexus Grants for Artists Fund was established in 2003 as part of the luxury car company’s constant pursuit to praise and encourage the visual arts.
