Grupo Episcopal San Lucas invests $17M in system-wide upgrades

Episcopal Church bishop David Álvarez and Guillermo Martin, CEO of Grupo San Lucas

Hospital operator Grupo Episcopal San Lucas has invested more than $17 million in the past six months to move forward its development plans to strengthen patient services offered at its Guayama and Ponce facilities, company officials announced Thursday.

The money has been spent on upgrading hospital infrastructure, purchasing new equipment and expanding services, said Guillermo Martin, CEO of Grupo San Lucas.

Of the global investment, $5 million will go toward building a new 16-bed, intensive care unit at the Hospital San Lucas Guayama slated to open in November. The hospital’s emergency and operating rooms are in line for expansions next year.

Meanwhile, Hospital San Lucas Ponce is now being outfitted with a new ‘fast-track’ emergency room and ambulatory injury care unit, at a cost of $700,000.

The bulk of the investment, $12 million, will go toward the purchase of new equipment and to renovate information technology systems to create electronic medical records for all of its patients.

“Since the beginning, we have been leaders in health services for the island’s southern region and all of Puerto Rico,” said Martin. “Our growth is a continuous process that responds to our society’s health needs and changes in science and technology.”

Meanwhile, Episcopal Church bishop David Álvarez said another important aspect of Grupo San Lucas’ expansion is opening a new hospital facility at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Ceiba for which it has set aside another $7 million.

Finally, next year, the group is looking to launch a new health plan for patients, the executives said.
