Habitat for Humanity of Puerto Rico has selected the families who will receive homes through its Homeownership Program at Padial 50, a nearly $2 million multifamily housing development in downtown Caguas.

The initiative is part of the nonprofit’s ongoing effort to expand access to safe, affordable housing on the island.

Padial 50 includes two restored buildings with 10 apartments ranging from 724 to 887 square feet. Each unit has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen, and a combined living and dining area.

The project also created about 30 construction jobs and preserved the structures’ original neoclassical architecture while improving accessibility for residents with disabilities, the organization said.

“This project has been transformative — not just the physical building, but also in terms of social and family well-being,” said Karla Peña, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Puerto Rico. “It’s an investment in the city’s present and future as we create affordable housing opportunities that are so needed today.”

More than 125 people applied for the program, reflecting strong demand. Families were selected based on need, financial readiness, and their willingness to partner with Habitat through volunteer service and training.

“For me, having my own home has always been more than a dream — it has been a life goal,” said new homeowner Stephanie Lozada. “This home represents peace, proximity to work and well-being for my family.”

Residents will receive 0% interest mortgages, with payments reinvested to support future Habitat housing projects across Puerto Rico.
