Hospital Castañer adopts new ER system to boost efficiency

Hospital General Castañer, the largest health care facility in central Puerto Rico, has introduced a new electronic records system for its emergency room.

Hospital General Castañer has implemented a new electronic health record system for its emergency room aimed at improving efficiency, reducing wait times and increasing staff satisfaction.

The hospital, considered the largest health care provider in Puerto Rico’s central region, serves Lares, Adjuntas, Utuado, Jayuya, Maricao and nearby towns. It employs 250 staff and 35 providers and treats more than 15,000 emergency patients a year. The facility collaborated with eClinicalWorks to design and tailor the ER-specific system.

The platform integrates tools for patient tracking, registration, bed management, discharge planning and analytics to manage care from triage through discharge.

“The eClinicalWorks emergency room EHR solution has successfully helped us save significant time, streamline our documentation and workflows, and reduce patient wait times,” said Giovanni Ortiz-Pagán, CEO of Hospital General Castañer.

“Previously, we used ambulatory solutions that weren’t fully designed for ER workflow management. We collaborated closely with eClinicalWorks to develop an ER solution that would boost our efficiency,” Ortiz-Pagán said. “The real-time patient tracker is our favorite tool; it offers an intuitive view of all patients. All these features help us streamline operations, boost staff satisfaction and improve patient outcomes.”

The system includes computerized provider order entry, interdisciplinary charting, medication administration tools and a real-time analytics dashboard with performance indicators.

By integrating these functions, the hospital expects to improve coordination among departments and deliver faster, more accurate care, officials said.

“Hospital General Castañer is now better positioned to provide efficient, 24/7 critical acute care to patients throughout central Puerto Rico,” Ortiz-Pagán said.
