Hospital Pavia Arecibo launches internal medicine residency program
Hospital Pavia Arecibo has launched its first internal medicine residency program, marking a milestone for both the hospital and the Metro Pavia Health System. The program officially began July 1 with an inaugural class of 21 medical residents.
The program, developed in collaboration with the Universidad Central del Caribe and the Puerto Rico Department of Health, aims to strengthen medical education and support the island’s health care workforce.
“This is a pivotal moment for Hospital Pavia Arecibo and for the entire Metro Pavia system,” said José Talavera, executive director of the hospital. “The launch of our internal medicine residency not only expands our capacity for medical care but also reaffirms our dedication to training the next generation of doctors in Puerto Rico.”
The program is named in honor of attorney Eduardo Artau, recognized for his contributions to public health.
“We’re proud to dedicate this program to Eduardo Artau, a true leader in health,” said Karen Z. Artau-Feliciano, president of Metro Pavia Health System.
The residency provides recent medical graduates with advanced training in diagnosing and managing complex adult illnesses. Residents will work under experienced faculty, gain hands-on experience in modern clinical settings, and serve patients in Arecibo and neighboring communities.
