More than 800 hackers from the island are expected to participate in HackPR 2016.

HackPR, a nonprofit comprised of students and young professionals promoting the development of technical skills through unconventional teaching methods, will host its 6th annual “hackathon” Sept. 24-25, expected to draw students to work on ideas and projects.

The event will take place at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey, where participants will come together to solve problems for business or social purposes, or for their own technical development. The last edition of this event brought together more than 500 software and hardware developers, organizers said.

More than 800 hackers from the island are expected to participate in HackPR 2016, which for the first time will open a category for professionals from different branches. Also for the first time, there will be opportunities for visitors who want to know about the different areas available for creativity and innovation.

“After spending such a long time at the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus we saw the need to move HackPR to San Juan to make it more accessible to the technology and innovation community and bring this movement more and more people,” said David Bartolomei, co-director of HackPR.

The Puerto Rico Science and Research Trust and the Puerto Rico Statistics Institute sponsor the initiative.

There is no minimum age or experience required to participate. For more information about tickets visit HackPR’s website.
