Humacao installs electronic surveillance system

Looking to improve the fight against crime in his town, Humacao Mayor Marcelo Trujillo recently installed a new $300,000 electronic surveillance system to back up the work of the municipal police force.
The system, housed at the town’s Electronic Surveillance Service Operations Center, comprises 15 surveillance cameras strategically positioned throughout Humacao’s high-crime areas.
Monitoring stations outfitted with large-screen monitors and digital video recording equipment will help staff collect high-definition footage that will be stored for a 30-day period.
The security plan also called for purchasing five new patrol cars for the law enforcement agents, Trujillo said.
“While other towns eliminated their municipal police, we decided to keep it and fight crime without the help of the central government, recruiting 15 new officers to prevent, intervene and get the conviction,” said Trujillo, adding the town financed the beefed-up security plan with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program.
